When I wrote the first All’s Fair in Love and Potty Training I knew I would be doing a follow up when it was time for Sienna, I just never dreamed it would be so soon. Maybe we put it off longer with Bailey because of Sienna’s impending arrival. Maybe we weren’t ready as new parents and put too much pressure on ourselves. Or maybe we weren’t ready to potty learn.
With Sienna, we weren’t even thinking of potty training yet. With our Disney trip coming up, I thought we would wait until we got back to start talking about it. Little did I know, Sienna had a plan all on her own.
Get Naked
There are two settings in our house: Fancy Nancy Dress Up Parties or Full On Naked Bonanza. Poor Dad never knows what he’s going to get when he comes home. Streaking and naked booty shakes are as high on the list of favorite activities as tea parties and fairy house building. I never thought
Put your panties back on, please
would be on repeat at our house with two girls, but we have two free-spirits we’re raising.
Sienna started ripping off her diaper and refused to put it back on. It was like wrestling an alligator. So one night I told her she needed to sit on the little potty if she was going to run around naked. She ran over and before we knew it, she peed and pooped! What?! She wasn’t even phased by it and while we were clapping and praising her she just looked at us like, “what’s the big deal?” and got back to chasing her sister.
Let’s Get Down to Business
The next morning I awoke to a naked booty in my face yelling “Potty, Mommy, Potty.” Not fully aware who I was yet, I hopped out of bed and ran her to the potty. She sat down and peed right away. As the morning fog started to clear I realized we were now on her schedule and she was leading the way.
I cleared my schedule for the day and spent all my time watching her for cues and teaching big sister how she could help. It was a really long day and I felt like my head was going to explode but we got through it. We went a whole day without any accidents so when Daddy came home we decided to go pick out new panties at the store. She’s been in panties ever since.
Favorites This Time Around
With Bailey it seemed that we tried everything under the sun – sticker charts, pull ups, picking out a new potty, YouTube videos, books, etc. With Sienna, I was caught off guard a bit. We started with stickers but she wasn’t that interested in. She sat on the little potty for the first day but then wanted to sit on the big potty (no arguments here).
Picking out panties was her favorite thing, though deciding between Elsa and Moana was definitely stressful. But choosing between panties and diapers was a no-brainer.
Sienna’s favorite potty book is Even Princesses Poop! She will read that all day, every day. It was Bailey’s favorite too so she loves reading it with us – party in the bathroom!
My favorite trick of the trade would be the Potty Training Ladder Seat which we picked up for Bailey last summer. It may be a little clunky for the bathroom but it saves you a ton of time, cleaning and gagging over cleaning the little potties.
The Biggest Helper – Bailey
Sienna may be the star in this potty training adventure, but Bailey is definitely the best supporting character on our journey. Not only does she lead by example but she is very encouraging and supportive of her little sister. From asking her if she has to go to clapping and reading her favorite book to her, we couldn’t be prouder of big sis too.
The first few days were pretty intensive and Bailey was feeling a bit left out so we made sure to include her and she was able to earn “helper stars” throughout the day. She really enjoyed her helper chores and has continued them after the sticker charts went away.
I don’t know if this time around was easier because she is the second child and is constantly in a race to grow up with her sister or if it was easier because it came out of nowhere. Either way it’s been almost a month and she has only had a handful of accidents most of which were our fault. We’ve ventured out on all day journeys without incident and have almost mastered the overnight.
We’re not taking this for granted but are hoping that our good fortune with potty training is earned from all the difficulties we’ve had with sleeping (or should I say not sleeping). We couldn’t be prouder of our little bug and can’t wait to see what she decides to tackle next!
It’s been a crazy few weeks but we will be getting back to posting more and sharing some of our favorite projects soon.
